WINNER: Chelsea star Drew Spence

CHELSEA’S DREW SPENCE came out on top in the ‘Reggae Girlz FA Cup final’ clash in front of a record breaking Wembley crowd of 49, 095 on May 15, reports the Voice of Sport from Wembley Stadium.

The Blues, who claimed the famous cup just days after securing the Women’s Super League title, saw off Manchester City 3-2 in the Wembley final to disappoint Jamaica Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw.

After a gripping 90 minutes of football that saw Shaw register a first half assist for City’s equaliser, Chelsea’s efforts were then pegged back again, this time in the 89th minute to trigger another awesome 30 minutes of blockbuster entertainment that saw Spence and Chelsea complete a dramatic double to retain their FA Cup crown, leaving Spence to end her career with Emma’s Hayes’ team on a high with the WSL and FA Cup trophies firmly in her back pocket.

Chelsea’s Sam Kerr showcased her big game player credentials through opening the scoring before subsequently bagging her brace in the 99th minute to shut out the possibility of a nail biting penalty shootout. All in all, it was a tight encounter between two teams performing at the best of their abilities

Shaw told the Voice of Sport post-match: “I was talking to my agent earlier I was telling him that I think this is the biggest crowd I’ve played in front of

“I tried to embrace that moment because it’s an experience, that what you want to play as a footballer, hopefully the women’s game can get better and more people can come out.”

Despite defeat, the 25 year-old forward was happy as her debut season concluded. She added: “It’s been great! The league is getting better and better every year.  For me, it was just, you know, it was to get familiar with my teammates and get used to the way City play because it’s very, very detailed.

“The beginning of the season I didn’t hit the ground running solely because of the injuries and players were dropping out.

“So you know, the synergy wasn’t like there, you know chemistry wise on the pitch, it’s  another season the girls came back and you know, we hit the ground running and then we’re flying.”
