HE MAY not yet be a household name in Britain or the US, but rising acting star David Oyelowo got a major boost in that direction thanks to a bizarrely humorous introduction at the Palm Springs gala by Hollywood icon Brad Pitt.

The 51-year-old movie star decided to help the audience get the pronunciation of Oyelowo’s name spot on in a rather unconventional way – song.

Before the British Nigerian actor came on stage to receive the Breakthrough Performance Award for his role as civil rights hero Martin Luther King in the historical drama Selma, Pitt informed the star-studded crowd that he was there to “help” them say the award-winner’s surname properly at the annual film festival held on Saturday (Jan 3).

Pitt, who was a producer along with Oprah Winfrey in King biopic, asked the audience to chant Oyelowo’s name to the tune of something probably more familiar to football fans inside a stadium.

Unfazed, Pitt continued to school those assembled until Oyelowo bounded onstage to make his acceptance speech.

The Selma leading man joked: “You know you’ve broken through when Brad Pitt sings your name.”

Big things are predicted for Oyelowo, who has enjoyed supporting roles in films such as Interstellar, The Butler, and Lincoln.

As the awards season ramps up, he might even be in line for the coveted Best Actor award at the Oscars, a prospect Pitt alluded to when he compared Oyelowo to acting greats Sidney Poitier and Laurence Olivier.
