IT’S LONG been my mantra to do as the famous song says and ‘always look on the bright side of life’. It sounds like the cheesiest of clichés, but it was something I felt was necessary to do.

Years of cynicism (that’s what a career in journalism will do for you) can easily cause you to form a ‘glass half empty’ mentality and I reached a point where I got fed up of that.

I didn’t start skipping down the road or smelling the flowers every time I walked through a park, but I did take small steps like telling myself ‘today is gonna be a great day’ every morning. After all, a positive mental attitude (PMA) is a great starting point for many of life’s tasks.

Recent months, however, have really put my PMA to the test. Moving house, challenges at work and other personal issues have all brought me a considerable amount of stress. And even as one day drew to an end, knowing that certain frustrations would be there to greet me the following day made it hard to feel positive each morning.

But much like my original think positive epiphany, another one hit me recently while my one-year-old daughter was watching the children’s TV programme ZingZillas. As the oversized animal characters launched into a song, I found myself struck by the lyrics:

“It’s good to be me/ happy and free/ I’m sure you will see/ it’s good to be me.”

I smiled as my daughter clapped along and suddenly I realised: It is good to be me. Yes, life has its stresses, but I have my health, a wonderful daughter, a loving husband, supportive family and friends, a roof over my head and food to eat each day.

The thought of all I had to be thankful for suddenly made my problems pale in comparison. And the fact that it was a simple song on a children’s programme that restored my positive mindset, reinforced how, with a bit of effort, we really can change our outlook on life.

So when I discovered there is such a thing as a Day of Happiness campaign, which is today (March 20), I applauded it. A global celebration to mark the United Nation International Day of Happiness, the campaign is coordinated by Action for Happiness; a non-profit movement of people from over 140 countries who want to play a part in creating a happier society for everyone. Surely that has to be a good thing?

We’re often bombarded with so much negative news, why not have a day that celebrates all things happy? After all, we often embrace the things that personify the feel-good factor.

It’s a global day of happiness – so get happy! Here's a selection of songs to start you on the right path.
