RAHEEM STERLING’S Manchester City won the Premier League crown in the most dramatic fashion after a final day of twists and turns, reports the Voice of Sport.
City were crowned 2021/22 Premier League champions, their fourth title success in the last five seasons after beating gusty Aston Villa 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium. The win over the Midlanders sealed the title and saw City finish just one point ahead of second-place Liverpool at the end of a gruelling battle for supremacy.
The final round of fixtures started with both City and Liverpool needing to win to give themselves a chance of landing the the main domestic prize.
Villa and their manager Steven Gerrard handed Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool a lifeline as Matty Cash opened the scoring at City. Then former Anfield hero Philippe Coutinho left the hosts fearing the worst when he fired Aston Villa two goals ahead at the Etihad.
But City completed the most remarkable of comebacks, scoring three goals in five second-half minutes with strikes from Ilkay Gundogan netting twice and Rodri.
Meanwhile Liverpool, having gone a goal behind themselves ro Wolves, roused themselves with goals from Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Andrew Robertson giving them a 3-1 victory but in the end it didn’t matter as City perfomed their own heroics.
It is Sterling’s fourth PL crown and the success marks manager Pep Guardiola’s 11th major honour since becoming City manager in six years ago, a period which has seen the team’s style of play revolutionised by the Catalan and his backroom staff.
