Gallant West Ham keep Man City waiting for PL crown after thriller

Riyad Mahrez's missed penalty for City leaves door still open for Livepool

MISSED OPPORTUNITY: Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola

PEP GUARDIOLA’S Manchester City need just one more win to retain the Premier League title after recovering from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 against a charged up West Ham at an emotional London Stadium in today’s lunchtime kickoff, reports the Voice of Sport from London Stadium.

City arrived knowing that three points would all but secure the Premier League crown with just one game left of the season, while West Ham still needed to cement a European place by finishing in the top six.

The atmosphere inside the stadium was electric with both teams having plenty to play for, but it was also Mark Noble’s final home game for the Hammers. Having played over 550 games and making his debut almost two decades ago as a 17-year-old against Southend in the League Cup, he has gone on to score 62 goals and is deservedly a true club legend.

City, who scored ten goals in their last two games, began with Aymeric Laporte and captain Fernandinho who both passed late fitness tests, while Riyadh Mahrez, Gabriel Jesus and Jack Grealish also started. Meanwhile Michail Antonio and Craig Dawson returned for West Ham.

The visitors were dominant in possession in the opening twenty minutes but the hosts exposed City’s high line and struck first after 23 minutes when Jarrod Bowen latched on to a lovely pass over the top from Pablo Fornals and rounded keeper Ederson before slotting home from a tight angle.

City though, were unfazed and continued playing in the manner that has led them to the most Premier League victories this season and a phenomenal 94 goals.

However, they were once again caught on the break when Oleksandr Zinchenko was left out of position and Bowen controlled the ball beautifully and shot through the legs of Fernandinho and into the right corner past Ederson.

A shell-shocked City started the second half like a team possessed and clawed a goal back immediately when Joao Cancelo’s header landed in the path of £100m signing Jack Grealish, who volleyed into the ground and high into the roof of the net past a hapless Lukasz Fabianski.

They continued with their high intensity game, and were again rewarded when a superb cross whipped in by Riyad Mahrez was headed in for an own goal by Vladimir Coufal.

The home crowd, although deflated, constantly supported their team and veteran Noble was brought on with 15 minutes when he replaced Manuel Lanzini. He later enjoyed an emotional send off after the final whistle with a fitting tribute by past and present club players, managers and staff.

Meanwhile City, holding 78% possession and registering five times as many shots as the Hammers, smelt blood and were pressing for a winner. Ten minutes from the end, Gabriel Jesus fell to a questionable late challenge in the box and after a lengthy wait, and a trip to the VAR monitor, referee Anthony Taylor awarded a spot kick. Mahrez, City’s top goal scorer this campaign, stepped up and hit well but Lukasz Fabianski easily saved.

It turned out to be City’s last major chance in the game which ended all square – a fair result given that it was actually Bowen who could have won it for the Hammers when he missed a glorious chance for his hat-trick after 73 minutes when he shot just wide.

And so, after 37 rounds of this dramatic football season, the Premier League race is still not decided.

City must beat Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa on the final day next weekend to secure their fourth title in five years while the Hammers must get a result away at Brighton to ensure sixth place and a spot in the Europa League competition again.
