The keep-fit fanatic talked to Soul Stirrings about her life, faith and career. Your radio show had its humble beginnings as a one-hour slot but, six month’s later, it increased to five days a week. How do you feel about that? Woman to Woman is the first show produced specifically for Christian women on Premier, so the twice-weekly slot was to see whether it was something Premier listeners wanted. After six months we realised it was extremely successful so it felt natural to launch the show five-days a week. Although I was quite daunted by the task, I felt I had adopted a huge all-female family and I wanted the show to live up to their expectations. What sorts of issues has the show covered and which ones have proven to be popular with your listeners? The everyday and hidden issues are those that prove to be the most popular. When the show first launched we had phone-ins on domestic violence in the church, it shocked me to hear caller upon caller giving their experiences of abusive relationships, sometimes at the hands of pastors or those trusted in the church. I’ve had huge response to programmes dealing with singleness and adultery, but its not all negative, Which interviewee had the most impression on you and why? It has got to be author Heather Gemmen, she wrote book called Starting Beauty – which tells her personal testimony. Heather is a from a white background and was raped by a black man in her home, at knifepoint while her children where sleeping and husband was out at church – she then becomes pregnant. The book tells of the many challenges of faith she and her husband had to overcome before deciding to keep the child. In a society where race and faith is so divisive, it was the most powerful and heartfelt witnesses to faith I’ve ever heard. What inspired you to be a radio presenter and how did you get started in your career? I don’t think I ever wanted to be a radio presenter. I knew I had a passion for media and through a process of elimination I knew radio was for me. I worked for the Northern Film School and did some TV but didn’t really feel I was meant to be there. I ended up doing some hospital radio at King’s College in London and then when I went off to University in Leeds, I worked with Galaxy and Pulse Radios. When I decided to move from Leeds back to London I went for an internship at Premier and they’ve not able to get rid of me since. What’s it like working for a Christian station? I work in a very friendly and open atmosphere where faith doesn’t have to be hidden. It’s also been a huge learning experience, when I first started out I had no idea about some wings of the church it’s only through the work we do that I learnt more about them. Aside from presenting Woman to Woman what else do you do on Premier? I’m part of a group of people who produce and read the news bulletins. I also help decide which stories we tackle and guests we book for the entire Premier output. My other hat is co-presenting Premier’s youth show HipRock UK on Saturday afternoons. It’s something I love doing, it’s completely different to any other shows I work on. Tell me a bit about your Christian background? I grew up in Christian home where I was brought up a Catholic and also had strong influence from the Ghanaian evangelical churches. Faith and culture are completely intertwined for me. It’s very much a family feel. What are your aspirations, where your career in radio is concerned? I’d like to reach even more women, I don’t think there’s enough support out there for the modern woman with all the challenges they face. There’s simply not enough plain speaking. I want to be a woman that will speak out when others can’t or won’t. So I hope to work towards this career, although I really can’t see myself out of the media environment.
