We celebrate the reggae legend on his special day
Posted: 06/02/2014 10:40 AM

ON THIS DAY, the legend Bob Marley was born in the village of Nine Mile in St Ann Parish, Jamaica.

Born Robert Nesta Marley, the talented singer would have been 67 years old today, had he not died of cancer in 1981, aged 36.

Heavily influenced by social and political issues in his native Jamaica, Marley's music conquered the world and gave us hits like; I Shot the Sheriff, No Woman, No Cry, Could You Be Loved", Jamming, Redemption Song, and One Love.

A compilation of his hit songs, Legend, which sold over 25 million copies worldwide, is still to this day the best selling reggae album of all time.

Born to a white English father and black Jamaican mother, Marley always acknowledged his mixed ancestry.

"I don't have prejudice against meself. My father was a white and my mother was black. Them call me half-caste or whatever. Me don't dip on nobody's side. Me don't dip on the black man's side nor the white man's side. Me dip on God's side, the one who create me and cause me to come from black and white," he once said.

On what would have been his 69th birthday, we salute and celebrate the legend Bob Marley!
