Zimbabwean singer Chiwoniso Maraire dies, aged 37

PASSED AWAY: Chiwoniso Maraire

POPULAR ZIMBABWEAN singer Chiwoniso Maraire has died aged 37, her manager has said.

One of the country’s best-loved performers, Maraire is suspected to have died from pneumonia – her death comes only a year after her ex-husband and noted musician Andy Brown died.

She won international acclaim for her 1990s album Ancient Voices that established her on the World Music stage.

The late singer also broke down barriers by playing instruments, such as the mbira and thumb piano, that traditionally are only played by men in Zimbabwe.

Maraire, born in the US in 1976, was the daughter of famous Zimbabwean mbira musician Dumisani Maraire.

Her manager Cosmas Zamangwe told Zimbabwean state-owned Herald newspaper: “She has been in hospital for the past 10 days suffering from chest pains.

“We are however still to ascertain the disease she was suffering from but we suspect it is pneumonia.”

She leaves behind two children she had with Brown.
