AT LEAST 40 people have died after a bus caught fire in Zimbabwe yesterday.

Around 27 people were injured as a result of the bus bursting into flames, with three suffering severe burns.

Because the bodies were so badly burnt, work is still underway to establish exactly how many people perished on the bus.

Kim Satambuli, a journalist and head of communication for the Red Cross in Zimbabwe, posted photos of the burnt out bus on social media.

He wrote: “Zim Red Cross first aid teams respond to horrific accident around midnight involving a South African bound bus. 24 people ferried to Hospital. [Number] of deaths tbc as the bodies were burnt beyond recognition.”

Images of the bus show that the fire reduced it so just a frame.

The bus, which was bound for South Africa, was located in Gwanda district, roughly 340 miles from Zimbabwe’s capital Harare at the time of the incident.

The driver of the bus was among those who survived the fire, local newspaper The Herald reported. He escaped with minor burns.

He told the publication that the fire began after an onboard explosion that engulfed the entire vehicle.

Some state reports have said that a gas tank carried by a passenger may have been the cause of the explosion.

Nathan Nkomo, Zimbabwe’s civil protection unity director, has said that $15,000 will be made available to the bereaved families to go towards covering funeral costs.
