Yakubu hangs up his boots

END OF THE ROAD: Yakubu in action for Blackburn Rovers

NIGERIAN FORWARD Yakubu has retired. His performances in the 2002–03 UEFA Champions League for Maccabi Haifa earned a loan move to English club Portsmouth which became permanent as they were promoted to the Premier League in 2003. He has since appeared in over 250 Premier League matches for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, and Blackburn Rovers, and is the second highest African goalscorer in Premier League history with 96 goals.

The Super Eagle, who made 57 appearances (21 goals) for his country, has halted his club career four goals short of 100, last featured on the professional stage for then League One side Coventry in February.

Full name Yakubu Aiyegbeni, he made only three appearances for Coventry and was left out of their squad for the remainder of last season before his contract was terminated.
