Winger on the brink

TARGET: Charles N'Zogbia

FRANCE WINGER Charles N’Zogbia is on the verge of a move to Aston Villa. The Midlands club have made a £10m bid to sign the Wigan Athletic player after losing Ashley Young recently.

New Villa manager Alex McLeish is keen on the Frenchman to replace Stewart Downing, who is in talks with Liverpool after the clubs agreed a fee on Tuesday. N'Zogbia, 25, has made almost 250 appearances in English football, with Wigan and former club Newcastle.

The France international was brought from Le Havre to England during Sir Bobby Robson’s reign as Newcastle United manager in 2004 and went on to make more than 100 appearance for the club before leaving in acrimonious circumstances.

Having played a key role in helping Wigan avoid relegation in recent seasons from the Premier League, N’Zogbia has let it be known that he would like to join a bigger club.

Talks between Villa and Wigan are believed to be at an advanced stage and there is unlikely to be any problem with the personal terms. N'Zogbia is expected to agree a £65,000-a-week deal.

Villa could yet move for another City player, with Shaun Wright-Phillips understood to be on their radar. Wright-Phillips is one of a number of players on the fringes that City have deemed surplus to requirements.
