PAST GLORIES: Serena (left) with sister Venus at Wimbledon

FOUR-TIME Wimbledon champion Serena Williams will face Czech Barbara Zahlavova-Strycova in the first round of this year’s competition whilst her sister Venus, who was unseeded for the draw, takes on Elena Vesnina.

Zahlavova-Strycova is currently ranked 61st in the world and the furthest she has reached at Wimbledon is the third round in 2008 and 2010. Serena Is 6th seed in the draw and the pairing means that she cannot meet world number 1 Maria Sharapova until the final.

Serena, who has 29 Grand Slam titles to her name, last won the women’s singles title at Wimbledon in 2009. Last year, she was knocked out in the last 16 by French woman Marion Bartoli.

32-year-old Venus is unseeded for the first time since her debut at the All England Club in 1997. Her Russian opponent Vesnina is currently ranked 83rd in the world and has not progressed past the second round at Wimbledon since 2009.

The elder Williams sister, who has five Wimbledon titles to her name, dropped to 55 in the rankings whilst dealing with the auto-immune disease Sjogren’s Syndrome. Her last appearance was at the French Open where she crashed out in the second round.
