WINNER: Frankie Dettori after his 50th Royal Ascot success
HOUSEWIVES FAVOURITE Frankie Dettori brought up his 50th winner at Royal Ascot yesterday afternoon, sealing the win with his trademark flying dismount and in front of a jubilant crowd.
Dettori, who enjoyed his first win at the Royal Meeting back in 1990 on Markofdistinction, clinched his 50th win in the Sandringham Stakes on Osaila.
The half century of wins at the Royal Meeting has capped a fantastic June for the Italian who claimed his second Investec Derby aboard Golden Horn at the start of the month and steered Star of Seville to victory in the prestigious Prix de Diane in Chantilly at the weekend.
Speaking to Channel 4 afterwards, the ebullient Italian said: “It’s extra special, the big number 50! This was one of my best rides of the week”.
Ascot is a track which has been kind to Dettori and was the scene for one of his greatest career achievements when, in September 1996, he won all seven races on one day, costing the bookmakers tens of millions of pounds in the process.
Claiming his 50th winner at Royal Ascot cements Dettori as the most successful current jockey at the famous week and puts him fourth in the all-times standings behind Lester Piggott on 116; Pat Eddery on 73 and just six behind Willie Carson on 56.
