Whats the Play? with Anthony 'Play' Douglas

CHANGE: Form 696 (Photo credit: @jkingtheartist)

THIS PAST week it has been revealed that based on talks with Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and promoters, artists and venues in London, the controversial Form 696, which has been used to gather information on all promoters, DJs and artists participating in an event will be scrapped.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: "This decision will help London’s night-time economy thrive, ensure the capital is a welcoming place for artists and DJs of all music genres and that Londoners are able to enjoy live music safely.”

Some feel that the form has been used to profile events and could be one of the main reasons that a lot of "Urban" events have been banned in and around London, so this change should be music to promoters ears.

Superintendent Roy Smith said: "We have taken the decision to remove the Form 696 and instead develop a new voluntary partnership approach for venues and promoters across London." This is an interesting approach and I look forward to seeing what effect it has on London's nightlife over the coming months.

MUST WATCH

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
DVD out now

This fast paced chaotic film from Guy Ritchie is the one to watch this week. Vortigern, is the brutal and cunning Uncle of King Arthur, hell bent on ruling the land and becoming King, stopping at nothing to seize control.

King Arthur, being raised on the city’s streets is unaware of his powers until he is thrust into battle against Vortigern to reach his true destiny and retain his legacy.

Ok, from film to people making movies in the community - I caught up with Emannuel and Lawrence of Happy2Host for a little Q&A.

Q: Tell us about Happy2Host, what is it all about, who are some of your past and present clients?

Lawrence: Happy2Host is a web development and user experience design agency. We founded the company in 2008 with the focus (which still remains today) on building visually engaging, functional websites that enable you to give the best impression of your offering to visitors and potential customers.

Emmanuel: Our focus is working with schools, businesses and brands and we’ve been fortunate enough to work with a range of clients from a variety of sectors and businesses. Some examples of our work with corporate businesses include Tesco and HSBC, educational establishments such as St Michaels’ Catholic College and the Catholic Teaching Alliance.

In the Sporting world we have created websites for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Raheem Sterling and in the entertainment industry we’ve built sites for Maleek Berry, Davido and DJ Melody Kane.

Q: What's the benefit of having a website, especially when there are so many other digital touchpoints people can have with their audience e.g. social media?

Lawrence: Social media platforms have their purpose and can certainly boost your revenue. They are a great, cost-effective way to engage with your audience and generate interest. But there are limitations that a website doesn’t have; Instagram relies on quick visual content and short comments and Twitter limits your word count to only a few characters.

Emmanuel: As Lawrence has mentioned - social media is about the quickfire content. If Instagram or Twitter one day just decide to shut down, that’s all your content gone. A website on the other hand is yours and guaranteed to stay unless you decide otherwise.

Q: What advice would you give to people wanting to start a business, especially if in full time work already?

Lawrence and Emmanuel:
1) Follow your interests and passions. It's far easier to commit to something you actually believe in.
2) Be resilient and be prepared to constantly look at things from different perspectives.
3) Get comfortable with failure, not everything will work the first time. Reflect, modify and take action.
4) Never stop learning, always keep trying to improve your craft. There’s a saying, “If you’re standing still, you’re moving backwards”.

FOUNDERS: Emmanuel and Lawrence

Q: What's coming up for H2H?

Emmanuel: We’ve got some amazing projects lined up, and are looking forward to delivering even more great online solutions for our customers. In addition to web development, we now offer video and photography services that very much enhance a person’s experience when visiting a website.

Another area we’re looking at that’s actually quite important for all websites is security. Google have recently announced that they will be ranking secured websites higher and more favourably than unsecured sites. Having a website that is marked as unsecured is not only detrimental to your ranking, but can cause repetitional damage to your business or brand. With that in mind we’ll be offering a package that will deem your website as Google certified.

Lawrence: In parallel to Happy2Host, we are starting a social enterprise project through ‘Just A Guy Trying to Make it’, which will involve us going into schools and colleges and mentoring young people. We are going to launch this in January 2018.

Q: You mentioned ‘Just A Guy Trying To Make It’ - what is that about?

Lawrence: It's a blog where I write posts about my health experiences and my general journey in life. I started it after a serious epileptic attack three years ago which left me unable to walk properly for nearly three months and needing physio. The attack also left me with severe chronic pain in my knees and at times other joints. I have been in and out hospital for the last three years with this condition which is frustrating, but being able to share my journey has helped.
