WARRINGTON NATIVE: Manchester United star Jesse Lingard hails from the Cheshire town
WARRINGTON IS in the running to be the UK City of Culture 2021, a position currently held by Hull.
Among the luminaries from the Cheshire location are Manchester United footballer Jesse Lingard and legendary indie band The Stone Roses.
The City of Culture title traditionally attracts a wealth of funding and opportunities that will benefit local people and organisations.
The initial bid stage is expected to cost Warrington Council and its partners around £100,000. If they are awarded the privilege in 2021, costs will be offset by a guaranteed £3million gift from The Heritage Lottery Fund, which has pledged money to whoever becomes the City of Culture that year.
A further boost to Warrington’s coffers could equal yet more millions if estimates related to Hull are anything to go by. Experts predict that the current UK City of Culture will end up with a £60 million trickledown to its economy. Hull has already secured £13 million since gaining the accolade.
