VP Records' Joel Chin murdered

The Jamaican producer was shot and killed last night

MURDERED: Joel Chin

REGGAE label VP Records is in mourning, following the murder of Joel Chin, grandson of the company’s founders Pat and Vincent Chin.

The 35-year-old producer, who also headed up VP’s A&R department, was reportedly shot and killed as he drove up into his apartment in Stony Hill, St Andrew, Jamaica last night (August 16). According to reports, Chin died instantly in his driveway.

VP Records, whose roster boasts artists including Beres Hammond, Tarrus Riley and Etana, released a statement, saying:

“It is with great sadness that VP Records must announce the passing of Joel Chin at the age of 35. Joel was shot last night (Tuesday, August 16) outside his home in Stony Hill, St. Andrew in Jamaica. The cause was not immediately known.

“The grandson of VP Records founder Vincent Chin, son of famed Reggae producer Clive Chin and nephew of the owners of VP Records, Chris and Randy Chin, Joel literally grew up in the Reggae business and put his vast knowledge and connections at the service of the music he loved passionately.

The statement continued: “An accomplished producer, Joel had moved from New York to Jamaica two years ago to spend more time on music production, songwriting and developing rising talents. Joel wrote hit songs for many artists such as Elephant Man and Etana among many others.

“Joel is survived by his mother Juliette, his father Clive, his newborn daughter, two brothers, and three sisters.”

As the news of Chin’s murder spread, a host of reggae stars and insiders took to Twitter to pay tribute to the much-loved producer, who had bases in both Jamaica and New York.

Sean Paul tweeted: “As another bright light fades, we give tnx 4 life and reminisce. R.I.P. Joel Chin.” Fellow dancehall star Shaggy simply wrote: “RIP Joel Chin.”

BBC 1Xtra’s dancehall DJ Robbo Ranx said: “Deepest condolence goes out to the family of Joel Chin of VP Records…always made me feel welcome in NY.”

Rest in peace, Joel. Whomever made the comment above about VP Records is inconsiderate and completely out of order. How dare you even suggest that any royalty could replace a man's life? Joel was a good man and certainly NEVER responsible for the frivolous accusations of disgruntled artist(s). The idea that someone could be as cold as suggesting kharma in this instance really didn't know how wonderful and kind and genuine Joel was. You should watch out for your own kharma as you live in a glass house.

Joel you are loved by far more people in this world. Loved and cherished. One can never please every single person....but somehow you had a blessing of pleasing the masses. We love you and miss you.

These guys who did this HORRENDOUS were obviously paid by one of his enemies (always someone close). But you know what, "what goes around comes around." It might not be today or tomorrow but one day they will get there 'pay back' and when it comes they are going to get a worse exit, TORTURE don't sound too bad for those guys. May his soul rest in peace!!! Here JAMAICA goes again, I don't know why he moved back there, he could have kept his base in NY and travel back and forth and he would still be living. God Bless, RIP.

Sorry to hear that Joel Chin got killed but maybe karma plays a part in this. Joel and VP records' owners have been using Jamaican artists for years. They would release the artists music worldwide and make lots of money as a result and these singers were never paid...no royalties... nothing.
Maybe now they will straighten up and do right because God is making sure that everyone pays for his/her actions.
"What will it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul."
A warning to all those who rip off Jamaican artist.

As the person in the comment implies that Joel's death couldve been a warning to companies ripping off "Jamaican Artists". First of all, Joel is not the one to use as an example. No one is to take another's life, it is written. Seriously tho, killing him didnt give anyone more riches or royalty as u mentioned. Really a shame that people dont live to be old anymore, live to have grand and great grand children. In Joel's case, he wont get to see his daughter grow up and she wont get to experience the kind heart he has. So at the end of the day, this was a HATE crime, how do u hate on a person that only has love in his heart. He wouldnt hurt a fly, and this was unexpected and uncalled for. I love you, your family loves you, the world loves you and you will truly be missed Joel. <3

Here we go again. Someone shot and killed the guy for what? No robbery was reported, so basically they wanted him dead. What a shame. Jamaica in the news again. Negative as usual.

Joel will be happy when he run into Michael Jackson in heaven. They will be making sweet reggae music up there. RIP JC.
