A Charlottesville City Councilman in Virginia has resigned from his teaching position after he recently came under fire for tweets he made years ago that disparaged white people.

News outlets report Wes Bellamy, who is black, announced in a statement Monday that he has decided to resign from his post at Albemarle High School.

Bellamy was placed on administrative leave after the tweets surfaced last month.

Some officials described them as racist, sexist and homophobic.

Bellamy apologised in a Facebook post, and later resigned from his seat on the Virginia Board of Education.

Bellamy says he has three years remaining on the City Council, where he also holds the ceremonial title of vice mayor.

He received the most votes in last year's council election.
