Venus Out: Williams loses in Hong Kong Open to Naomi Osaka

COMPETITORS: Venus Williams and Naomi Osaka

VENUS WILLIAMS was knocked out in the second round of the Hong Kong Open by 19-year-old Naomi Osaka, BBC Sport reports.

Williams, playing in her second match since the US Open, lost 7-5 6-2 to the Japanese, who is ranked 64th in the world.

After the match, Osaka said: "I feel like even if I hit one semi-short ball she would come in and crush it, so I had to play really well."

This win was the best of Osaka's career in terms of rankings, beating the World No.5 after her triumph against World No.6 Angelique Kerber at the US Open last month.

According to WTA Tennis, "Osaka's double-fault handed Williams the first break of the match, and the 37-year-old looked to be cruising to the first set on her own comfortable serve.

But the teenager got herself three break points as Williams attempted to serve out the set, leveling the score to 5-5 with a brilliant return.

Then after holding serve she ramped up the pressure on Williams, breaking her once more to take the set 7-5."

Osaka wil now face will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarterfinal, who beat Jacqueline Cako 7-6(3), 6-1.
