UK Parliament Week explored from a black British perspective

LGBT+ ACTIVIST and co-founder and executive director of the UK Black Pride, Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, will lead a conversation about Protest, Parliament and Pride at Bishopsgate Institute on Wednesday 15 November as part of UK Parliament Week.

Opoku-Gyimah, who is also Head of Campaigns for the largest civil service trade union PCS, will explore campaigning and its place within the UK’s parliamentary democracy, what it means to protest outside the seat of government, and how activism has effected change.

Bishopsgate Institute Chief Executive Francesca Canty said: “for over 120 years Bishopsgate Institute has been a home for ideas and performance, learning and enquiry and independent thought. Parliament Week presents an excellent opportunity for the Institute to welcome people into our space to discuss their views as well as explore our special collections and archives which contain the rich histories of the many MPs whose collections we hold.”

On Tuesday 14 November, a free event will be hosted, led by Special Collections and Archives team Nicky Hilton and Stefan Dickers who will introduce visitors to treasures from the many personal collections of MPs found in our archive.

Attendees will find out who secured the right for MPs to affirm rather than swear on the Bible, see the robes Bernie Grant wore to the State Opening of Parliament, and discover which female MP introduced the first bill outlawing discrimination against women.

Later that week, people can attend our one-hour archives tour introducing visitors to numerous campaigners and organisations from radicals of the 1790s to placards from the London Women’s March in 2017.

UK Parliament Week takes place from the 13 to 19 November and is an annual programme of events connecting people with UK Parliament.
