Touching moment boy, 12, sees 'pretty' mum for first time

HEARTWARMING: Christopher Ward Jr saw his mum for the first time

A BLIND 12-year-old boy was able to see his "pretty" mum for the first time with the help of some super high-tech glasses.

Christopher Ward Jr has optic nerve hypoplasia, which means he can only see objects that are extremely up close.

The 12-year-old boy has been legally blind his entire life, but thanks to the help of a pair of $15,000 (£10,000) eSight electronic glasses, he was able to see his mother, Marquita Hackley, for the first time in his life.

Christopher donned the glasses, in which video is recorded live and then displayed on an LED screen right in front of his eyes, and then turned toward his mother as he saw her properly for the first time.

“To hear him say, ‘I saw my mum, and she was very pretty,’ was so heartwarming,” Hackley told ABC News. “And aside from pretty, just the fact he could even see me mean the whole world to me.”

“As a mother going 12 years with your child not being able to clearly see, I don’t really have words for it,” she told the New York Daily News.

Hackley couldn’t afford to buy the $15,000 glasses, but she set up a crowdfunding page and took her son’s story to the media.

After ABC News aired their story, donations poured in, and Hackley’s $15,000 goal was far surpassed. Christopher will not only get those glasses but will also have a good fund set up for college with the rest of the money that was donated.
