Tiger Woods set to plead not guilty

PLEA: Tiger Woods

TIGER WOODS is set to plead not guilty to a charge of driving under the influence, Sky News reports.

The news was revealed as his lawyer, Douglas Duncan, confirmed the 14-time major winner would not be attending his hearing in Florida on Wednesday (August 9).

This means that Woods will enter a not guilty plea - any plea other than not guilty requires the defendant's attendance.

Woods was arrested on May 29 after police officers found him unconscious at the wheel of his car, with visible damage to the driver's side of his Mercedes-Benz. He told the officers he was taking the painkiller Vicodin and Xanax to cope with his fourth back surgery in April.

Last month, he announced that he was receiving "professional help" to manage his medications, and later stated that he completed an "intensive program" at a clinic.
