Tiger Woods’ niece turns pro

FAMILY AFFAIR: Tiger and Cheyenne Woods

CHEYENNE WOODS demonstrated the golfing genes run strong in the family as she made her professional debut yesterday (July 5).

Cheyenne, who is the niece of Tiger Woods, was playing in the US Women’s Open, and she shot three over 75 in the first round.

The 21-year-old only recently turned professional after graduating from Wake Forest University, North Carolina.

Concerning her first taste of pro golfing, Woods said: “I feel pretty good about my round overall. It's a tough course, and I'm just happy to have survived.

“I'm a little drained after that almost six-hour round, but I'm just happy to be here and excited to be a part of the U.S. Open for the first time.”

Woods added: “I felt like I held in there pretty good.”

Naturally, her famous uncle, who established Woods as a household name, looms large in her own career.

“He's always been supportive of my career and excited that I'm taking this next step,” Woods said.

Cheyenne can rely on uncle Tiger for support, whether it is advice on putting technique or helping handle the pressures of the game and everything that comes from being in the limelight. Yet it is the emotional support she finds most important.

“That's probably the biggest thing I can get, his support. Knowing he's excited I'm here and that feels good he's there to support.”

Growing up with a golfing superstar in her family was something Woods was not afraid to trumpet when younger.

Talking to her university magazine, Woods said: “In elementary school, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I’d say, ‘Guess who my uncle is?’ I was so proud that I was related to him.”

There are great expectations resting upon Tiger Woods’ niece. And she is expecting the hopes and comparisons between her and her uncle to persist.

“I've always said that I'm going on my own path,'” she said.

“I have my own progression that I've taken. And just accomplishing my goals and doing what I can do, because Tiger is a very elite athlete. Not everybody can be Tiger Woods. So I just do what I can do to be the best that I can.”

Woods’ uncle has led the way, now it is her time to show there can be two champions in a family.
