Talawa announces new artistic director

NEW ROLE: Michael Buffong

TALAWA, BRITAIN'S most prominent black-led theatre company has announced the appointment of Michael Buffong as artistic director.

He will join the company, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, in early 2012. Buffong will succeed current artistic director Patricia Cumper, who is stepping down after five successful years in her role.

Speaking on his appointment Buffong said, “I am delighted to be given the opportunity to take on this immense and challenging role. As Talawa enters its 25th year, I look forward to leading the company into a new and exciting phase, and engaging our audience with excellent memorable theatre.”

Buffong has worked extensively as a director in television and theatre, and previously worked with Talawa directing Oladipo Agboluaje’s play A Passing Wind at the Pulse Fringe Festival in June of this year.

His other theatre credits include Crawling in the Dark (Almeida Theatre); Private Lives, A Raisin in the Sun, All the Ordinary Angels (Royal Exchange, Manchester); and To Kill a Mockingbird (West Yorkshire Playhouse, Birmingham Rep and UK Tour).
