Suspects arrested over Deptford house fire

PICTURED: Joel Urhie

TWO MEN have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of 7-year-old Joel Urhie, who died in a Deptford house fire.

The pair, aged 21 and 29 were detained on Saturday morning in connection with the arson attack that took place on August 7.

Police said the two suspects were being held on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and arson with intent to endanger life.

Sam Urhie, the brother of the victim, was also sent back to prison on Friday but is not being held as a suspect in relation to the fire.

Despite speculation over the fire being a suspected gang-related attack, DCI Mark Wrigley said police remain open-minded in regards to a motive.

He said: “This horrific incident has left a family shattered and the tragic loss of such a young life in suspicious circumstances resonates throughout the community in Deptford.”

Wrigley continued: “I would directly appeal to anyone who was in the area and saw anything suspicious at around 3.30am, or who has any information about who was responsible for starting the fire that claimed the life of an innocent child, to contact police immediately.”

In remembrance of young Joel, a Go Fund Me Page has been set up to support the Urhie family: https://www.gofundme.com/rest-in-peace-Joel-Urhie
