Stan Collymore reveals his phone was hacked

HACKED OFF: Collymore (PA)

FOOTBALL PUNDIT Stan Collymore has revealed that he has been the target of phone hacking and that he will pursue “the appropriate legal action.”

The 43-year-old former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker announced on Twitter this afternoon (Apr 23) that police had contacted him over the phone hacking as part of Operation Weeting, which has seen officers investigate claims that celebrities and public figures had their phones hacked by journalists working for media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s News International.

Collymore, who has famously campaigned against racist abuse on social media after being subjected to threats on Twitter, said: “I have been contacted by Operation Weeting to let me know several of my numbers were hacked.

“I will take the appropriate legal action.”

Former News Of The World and Sun editors Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson are currently on trial for overseeing the hacking of phones – allegations they both deny.

Actors Hugh Grant and Steve Coogan are some of the leading figures who have campaigned against phone hacking and sought to get justice for victims of those responsible for breaching their privacy.
