Sloane Stephens advances to her first US open quarterfinal

COMEBACK: Sloane Stephens

SLOANE STEPHENS continues her post-injury journey after reaching her first quarter final at the US Open.

She took a fourth-round win 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 over 30th seed Julia Goerges of Germany in nearly two hours.

The 24-year old won a thrilling second-round match upset beating 11th-seed Dominica Cibulkova before meeting Goerges in the fourth.

She joins fellow Americans Venus Williams and Madison Keys on their US surge into the business end of the Women’s draw.

Stephens continues her remarkable run playing Maria Sharapova’s conqueror 16th-seed Anastasija Semastova on Tuesday, despite suffering a stress fracture in her right foot which ended her 2016 season resulting in ten months out of the game.

She hadn’t played on the WTA tour until Wimbledon this year.
