Sister Sledge star Joni Sledge dies, aged 60

JONI SLEDGE, one of the members of popular 70s group Sister Sledge has died aged 60.

Sledge was discovered dead at her home in Phoenix, Arizona, by a friend on Friday (March 10).

The group's publicist, Biff Warren, said that the cause of death has not been established and that Sledge had not been ill.

In a statement: the Sledge family said: "On yesterday, numbness fell upon our family. We welcome your prayers as we weep the loss of our sister, mother, aunt, niece and cousin."

Joni and her sisters Debbie, Kim and Kathy formed Sister Sledge in 1971, and came to prominence with the success of their album We Are Family in 1979.
