Seven years for glassing girl

JAILED: Aaron Fearon

A MAN who smashed a wine glass into a barmaid's face has been jailed for seven-and-a-half years.

Aaron Fearon, who has a number of previous convictions, claims he acted in self-defence and shoved the glass into Rhea Olawumi’s face after she bumped into him at a nightclub in Bolton, Greater Manchester.

But Miss Olawumi, from Bolton, says that Fearon had shouted abuse at her and that she had reacted by throwing a drink at him. It was then that Fearon attacked her with the glass.

The 26-year-old pub barmaid, who had to have 18 fragments of glass removed from her face after the 2009 attack, has been left permanently scarred with injuries doctors have describe as “horrific.”

Miss Olawumi has been left with a twitch in her left eye, which can only be fixed using a risky Botox operation, the court heard yesterday (July 19).

Judge Eliot Knopf, sentencing Fearon at Bolton Crown Court, said:

“There can be no excuse for what you did. The jury rejected your attempts to avoid responsibility for your actions.

“You were someone in a red mist and in your anger you were volatile and responded to a perceived insult in an extreme way.

“She will bear the mark of that night for the rest of her life, both mentally and physically.”

It has been reported that when Fearon was led from Bolton crown court, he shouted: “Seven-and-a-half-years for this? That’s pathetic.”
