Ryan Coogler signs on for Black Panther sequel

RYAN COOGLER will act as writer and director for a Black Panther sequel, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

According to the site, production is set to begin in 2019 or 2020, and Marvel wanted to keep the creative team as "intact as possible," following the massive success of Black Panther.

Sources say the current plan is for Coogler to write the script next year with an eye to start production in either late 2019 or early 2020.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel and parent company Disney, however, have not made any official announcements about Marvel's slate of movies beyond the release of the next Avengers pic in May 2019 and a Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel in July which they've begun production for.

Black Panther proved to be a massive success, both commercially and critically following its release in February 2018. The flick, which starred Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o, Michael B. Jordan and Daniel Kaluuya, grossed $700 million domestically and more than $1.3 billion worldwide, and is also considered a contender for Oscar consideration.

Coogler is currently developing the drama Wrong Answer with his close collaborator andBlack Panther star Michael B. Jordan, whom he worked with on his feature directorial debut Fruitvale Station. He also is executive producing LeBron James’ Space Jam.
