"Returning to Education Was A Sound Career Move"

TALENTED: Sonia Cassius Clay credit: Robert Workman

35 YEAR old Sonia Cassius-Clay from Woolwich is currently studying for a BA (Hons) Performance Sound degree at Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance in the London Borough of Bexley.

“After many years of being a professional singer, performing abroad and running my own business I decided to study a BA (Hons) in Performance Sound. I felt like I needed a change and the course was a perfect fit to my previous experience as a singer/DJ. I felt like the course could lead me to a broader range of sound jobs.

I'm a single mother but after doing some research I found out that there was help available to me and that it was something I could achieve.

When I applied for the course, the process was a lot easier than I was expecting. Quick and easy actually. Coming from running my own business, it had been a very long time since I'd written an essay. I'm now in my final year, have studied and worked with some of the most talented people across all areas of performance.

Rose Bruford College is unlike other Universities. It is full-time, hard work and we can be working 12 hour days when on a show, but this does reflect how it is in the industry.

The college is a great place to be. The Performance Sound course is practically the only one of its kind. Being based in London you literally have access to everything. The best shows, events and seminars which are ideal for industry experiences and contacts.

I learn best from physically doing something. The course is a very practical course which has given me the opportunity to work in large venues and operate the latest sound equipment. The course is very technical but there are many opportunities to be creative. The best of both worlds really.

The lecturers are amazing, incredibly helpful and everything is explained in detail. There is always an opportunity to ask questions and get extra help if needed. There are two theatres on campus which can be used to gain experience. We all get the opportunity to work in London theatres as well.

For anyone interested in a career in live engineering, sound design, radio or theatre – I definitely recommend Rose Bruford College. I have really enjoyed my time here!”

Graduating students from the BA (Hons) Performance Sound programme, and a range of other degrees for the theatre and live events industry, will be exhibiting their work and talking to prospective students at Ugly Duck in Tanner Street, SE1 3PL on Friday 16 June.
