Representation brought to life at Afro Hair & Beauty LIVE

SUCCESS: Afro Hair & Beauty LIVE

ONE OF Europe's largest shows for black hair and beauty closed the first half of the year with over 8,000 visitors attending the hannual event at the Business Design Centre in Islington.

From Afro Hijabis (natural-haired Muslims) to young children learning to embrace their natural hair, Afro Hair and Beauty LIVE 2018 proved that when it comes to hair, beauty and lifestyle in general, representation truly matters.

Verna McKenzie, Events Organiser said: “Once a year, thousands of people attend our event simply for the fact this is one of few places where, regardless of skin complexion or hair texture, they can receive expert advice or consultations, enjoy pampering treatments and leave feeling empowered and informed."

This year saw international brands exhibit for the first time including R&R Luxury, a Nigerian-based skincare brand exemplify luxury to the highest standards, whilst Sibahle Collection showcased their commitment to defying the status quo and beauty standards with their dolls that encourage black girls to embrace their natural beauty.

The fashion show, produced by Haiti73 agency made bold statements on the catwalk too with a mother and son making their debut into the industry. Yevan Bellot, 47, who had originally applied on behalf of her son, Joshua, 17, said: “As an advocate of female body positivity, I always questioned why producers of hair and beauty shows don't consider (or rarely use) women like me to walk the runway - bald, mature in age and plus size. Is being large or bald not beautiful?”

This year, the show attracted many newcomers including US-based Twist It Up and melanin experts Urban Skin Rx both were well received by visitors, many of whom attend specifically for exclusive UK debuts.

Rachel Roff, Founder of Urban Skin Rx said: "The overall experience was amazing! Coming all the way from the United States was a big investment but it was well worth it. The attendees welcomed us and were very receptive to our brand."

Meanwhile the winners of this year’s Luster S-Curl Battle of the Barber and Battle of the Beards competition proved to be a cut above the rest. Emmett Williams (Headlines) took first place , while Daniel Basterfield (F4Fade) came second and Vinay Lal (Headlines) third.
