Reggae singer backs gay rights

BREAKING TABOOS: Mistah Majah

A US based singer has decided to taken on broken one of reggae’s biggest taboos by making an album that supports gay rights.

Jamaican-born Mista Mahaj P, who lives in Oakland, California, released the album called Tolerance last month, telling The Voice he did so in a bid to tackle homophobia and hypocritical attitudes about the issue among people in his native Jamaica and elsewhere in the world.

He said having lived away from Jamaica for years, he decided to “set the record straight” after being barraged by stereotypical comments that wrongly painted all Jamaicans as people who hate gays.

On the album, Mista Majah P, who is NOT gay, calls for love and tolerance, through tracks such as Gay Marriage, A Letter To Bruce Golding and Gay Adoption in which he argues that there is nothing wrong with same sex couples adopting children and getting married.

“The reason for doing this pro-gay album is to try and stop the ignorance that people - not only Jamaicans -have toward lgbt (Lesbian, Gay and Transgender) people,” he said via email and his manager. “This album is an education and the beginning to let us break down the wall and start a conversation between gay and straight (people).

He added: “The reason I (also) did it is because of the way reggae artist has become so hypocritical and spreading lie,” he told The Voice via email and his manager. “Where I live we have a big gay population and when they (reggae artistes) come here, they perform for a majority gay audience and perform in the gay establishment; take the money and go back to where ever not telling the truth. I think that a double standard. Don’t take their money and then bash them.”

CONTROVERSIAL: Majah’s album Tolerance

Majah has won a clutch of Canadian Reggae Music Awards as well as performing all over Canada and the US.
Since the album’s release, Mistah Majah has won support from gay rights groups. However he is also fearing a backlash, telling The Voice he has received death threats and has been warned he cannot come back to Jamaica.

“...The response from fellow Jamaicans has two sides” he revealed “Some agree and some disagree. Some people are stunned saying ‘oh no he did not do or say what I think I heard’. Others say this should have been done a long time ago. But I have been accused of trying to change reggae music; getting death threat; certain friend don’t talk to me no more; certain Jamaican leave the room if I show up (and) been called gay derogatory names…There is a big backlash going on. I was told I cannot come back to Jamaica because I am a traitor for speaking out about the treatment of gay in Jamaica and worldwide.”

But despite the death threats, he has no regrets about making the album.

“This is just the start. Reggae needs to take a different direction. We need to find and bring back the love in ah reggae music. Reggae music use to be about love and unity (and) also revolution music. Now it all about division and killing and bling bling…

“Jamaican reggae artist start to act like the gay community should not listen to reggae music - like it not for them. That has to change. Reggae music is for everybody (and) that’s why I am here to break down that wall…showing Jamaicans and the world that tolerance is needed; gay have right and they are people and they need to be respected and they are a part of society.”

UK Gay rights group, Stonewall, welcomed the album, saying it welcomes any move that would help tackle homophobia. Over the years, there have been widespread cancellations of dancehall concerts from artistes such as Sizzla, Beenie Man, Buju Banton, Elephant Man, Vybz Kartel, Capleton, and Bounty Killer after gay activists ran a “Stop the Murder Music” campaign that said homophobic song lyrics incite people to kill gay people. In 2005, an agreement was reached between gay rights groups and a group of promoters and labels representing the reggae industry in which some artistes pledged not to use anti-gay lyrics in their records and at live performances. However, some artistes have since used the anti-gay lyrics.

Freedom of speech? I think Jamaica still allows it's people that. Unlike the U.S.A. We are not really allowed to voice our opinions anymore. So many of us Americans are against these gay rights movements and are just scared of opening our mouths.
We are being driven by society and led by our tongue. Step out of line and you lose your job or get a lawsuit. This is like communist regime. When will we get back the true m5eaning of "freedom of speech"

Now, if you ever want to see

Anonymous's picture

Now, if you ever want to see a dumb comment just check out the one prior to mine (Wed. 17th Aug at 15:55). This person is suggesting that black people are dumb because we don't do what white racist people do. In other words, whatever white people do is smart and what we as an ethnic group of our own volition cannot be smart.
Furthermore, the silly person who posted got his/her facts totally wrong. S/he claims that there are not many gays among whites anymore - WRONG! The number of white people 'coming out' is growing. Check the research. Similarly, s/he thinks that gayness is suddenly 'rampant' among Blacks - WRONG! There has always been a plethora of Black gay people but they did not make themselves known for fear of alienation from a backward society. As laws come in to protect gays and with society gradually becoming sensible and having changing attitudes more Black gays are finding the confidence to say 'I am'. As a result, you get a false perception that the number of African-Caribbean gays has mushroomed.

Reggae Singer backs gay rights

Anonymous's picture

Homosexuals, as all human beings aspire to live a peaceful existence without prejudice. Homosexuals have been making it very clear that they did not ask to be gay and be subjected to ridicule by normal society. I understand and accept that, but before I was able to, I actually sat down with a lesbian and question the obvious. For some people they don't understand it so they can't accept it. Fair enough , afterall it isn't easy to comprehend their sexual relationship.

Jamaicans have not been as quick as some society or culture in it's tolerance of homosexuality. And some reggae artistes have expressed their strong sentiments on the subject in their music.

Older Jamaicans were brought up in a time years back when homosexuality was not the norm. Some people who now embrace homosexuality probably did not readily do so in the distant pass. Some people may never change their position on the matter for personal or religious reasons, and it's their prerogative.

I know ignorance exist, but surely we can try to be civil and agree to disagree. No need to lambaste one another over our comments. We are all obliged and entitled to our opinion, and rightly so. Afterall, this is still a touchy issue for many people, gays and non-gays. Whether people are for and against homosexuality, homosexuals have be very open and active in embracing and promoting their gay-ness(through parades) over the past several decades, so it's not exactly a new issue.
Homosexuality is today's norm.

A Step in the Right Direction

I totally support this strong and talented Black man for setting precedence - Doing what others would never dare to think or do because they are given to the intolerance and learnt biases that were passed down to them.

Gays are human beings with a wealth of creativity to offer the world. They are God's children just as much as the heterosexuals. It is full time people put aside their hatred and focus on love. Where is the proof that God hates gays? So far only man keeps talking about God hating gays, but God himself has never shown his displeasure with gays. God is love and mercy and is a Just God - It is the Heart of man that matters, not your sexual orientation. Those who can't love gays, can't love Christ!

Well done Mistah Majah P.

Anonymous's picture

Well done Mistah Majah P. Please ignore all the condemnatory remarks made by some intolerant and selfish people here. You're not saying that you want to jump into bed with gay people - you're simply saying people differ and it's about time we accept that. Many people will reject gay life (which is about love and hurts no one) but they go on to endorse artists who take drugs and sell drugs and incite hatred and even gangster violence against others who offend them. They will praise such artists - "Ah my artist that" - but when someone like you tries to teach love and tolerance they lambast, defame and tear you down. Morality is not two-faced. That is the kind of hypocrisy that you are trying to strip away. Don't be daunted - keep up your good work - with more people like you the world can only become a more peaceful and loving place.
One last thing, we Jamaicans and other Caribbean nationals should least of all be judgemental about minority groups - we should be the last to persecute any group because our forefathers underwent that kind of treatment simply for being something that they had no choice over - being black. Many (not all) gays have no choice on what they feel and who they fall in love with. Just as no straight man would want to be forced to love a man - similarly, no gay man wants to be forced to love a woman because his chemistry does not work that way. Everyone deserves to be happy - if you are accusing in the name of religion then leave it to god to judge. If you're not using religion then it's none of your business anyway - it's between the man and his man. Keep your nose on your face and out of other people's face.
I know many people will reply to this with passionate rebuttals but I am not going to engage in time-wasting debate today because I've found that most of the intolerants are stubborn and close-minded and not willing to listen, think and reason - they are just locked in the brainwash of traditions and outdated attitudes that have been inculcated since their childhood.

I don't hate gays I hate the life style. The same way they have a right to be who they choose to be I have a right to say I don't condone that lifestyle. If you are against the laws of procriation then you shouldn't enjoy the seed of it, so I said no to gays adopting children. A child comes from a man and a woman so how can two men teach a child how to be a lady likewise two women teach a child how
to be a man.

I'm not sure what country you live in. However, here in America women have been raising kids without a father in the home. And several of those kids have turned out just fine. Your theory has holes in it. What would does it matter to you that gays want to adopt, unless you are planning on caring for the 1,000 of children that deserve a family. But I guess the kids are secondary in the matter huh?

Well done for rising above ignorant and narrow bigotry and being willing to tell the truth.

Long overdue...

Much appreciated

Tw points re the article though:

1) that LGBT stands for 'Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender' - your article left out 'bisexual'
2) I object to The Voice saying "On the album, Mista Majah P, who is NOT gay, calls for love and tolerance"

There is no reason to put "NOT gay" in large caps unless the person writing that is homophobic themselves..."not gay" would have been sufficient....
