A quick chat with... Ameriie

SHE FOUND fame in 2002 with her debut hit single Why Don’t We Fall In Love – and the song’s sentiment soon became a self-fulfilled prophecy for Ameriie.

The R&B singer did indeed fall in love when she began dating her manager Lenny Nicholson in 2004 and the pair wed in Anguilla in 2011.

In a quick chat with The Voice, the sexy songstress, who is currently on a UK tour, talks babies, books and going blonde.

Welcome back to the UK, Ameriie. How are you coping with the cold British weather?
I love British weather – perfect for reading, writing, and tea!

Are you excited about performing for your UK fans?
Very much so!

What do you enjoy most about performing live on stage?
The connection with the audience, especially when the venue is intimate, which is the case with this tour.

You've not released an album since 2009, what have you been up to since?
Working on my next two albums, BILI and Cymatika, as well as writing novels, which are currently unfinished.

You have a YouTube vlog, Books Beauty Ameriie. What do you love about reading?
I love getting lost in different worlds.

What are your top five books of all time?
My five favorite books of all time? That’s too hard! These are some of the books I love: The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling; The Complete Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm; Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel; The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North; Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison; and Maus 1 and 2 by Art Spiegelman.

What do you think of the R&B scene at the moment? How does it differ from when you first broke out?
The sound has changed, but that happens all the time with all music.

Are there any UK artists you're a fan of?
Whenever I’m put on the spot, this [drawing a blank] happens. Once this interview is finished I bet I’ll suddenly remember!

How does it feel to know that your single 1 Thing is still big in the clubs ten years after it's release?
I’m humbled.

A few years back, you dyed your hair platinum blonde. Why the drastic change?
I’m a person of extremes and when I get an idea in my head, I won’t rest until I do it.

You're married to your manager Lenny, what's it like working with your husband?

BUSINESS AND PLEASURE: Amerie with her husband and manager Lenny Nicholson

Do you give yourselves time off when you forget that you're superstar and manager and you're just Ameriie and Lenny?
My mind is always whirling, especially between music and books. But I think I always feel like Ameriie. Just Ameriie, the human being. That’s the same when I’m with my husband, or my sister, or my parents, or my friends, etc.

Do you hope to have kids in the future?
Yes, one day.

Would you support your children if they wanted to pursue a career in music?
Probably should have some children first; no need to put the cart before the horse!

Ameriie’s UK tour continues with performances at Glee, Nottingham (March 26); Academy, Manchester (27); The Drum, Birmingham (28); and Jazz Cafe, London (29 and 31).
