Prince William awards 'gold medal' to Ugandan football coach

HONOURED: Football coach Dennis Kirunda meets Prince William

A FOOTBALL coach from Uganda was amongst those who received an award from Prince William last week.

Dennis Kirunda received a gold medal and a certification to mark his contribution to "grassroots football development and uniting communities".

Kirunda, who arrived in the UK in 2001, says he set up the Africa Cup of Nations UK (AFCON UK) "to unite African communities in the UK using football as a tool".

The AFCON UK tournament which is now in its sixth year received the royal seal of approval from the Duke of Cambridge who was standing in for his grandmother the Queen on Thursday (Oct 17)

Kirunda, whose father Jimmy played for the Ugandan national team in the 1970s, said he was told by the second in line to the UK throne to "keep it up" in a nervous "30-second talk" with the Prince.

Kirunda said: “I was born in a footballing family. My dad was the greatest Jimmy. He was the life time captain played for the nation team. I was extremely happy to have been recognised by Prince William. “
