Pregnant pastor debate

PARENTS-TO-BE: Desiree Allen with her fiancé

AN UNMARRIED pastor in the US has caused a social media storm after she wrote a blog stating she is pregnant and will continue preaching until her twins are born.

Pastor Desiree Allen, an Associate Pastor of First Corinthians Baptist Church in Harlem is author of a blog which she used to announce her pregnancy. She also shared that she has been having sex since she was 15, that she found out she was pregnant while on holiday at Disney World, and whilst she was happy to be pregnant, she was fearful of what the church’s reaction would be.

She wrote:

“After the initial shock, was joy. Yet, underneath, something else was lingering. Anger? No. Disappointment? No. It was pure and utter dread. Not at being pregnant. Not at whether or not I would be a good mother. What had my stomach turning, other than nausea, was me being pregnant AND a pastor. Let’s face it. The church has not had a good track record of accepting unmarried women who got pregnant.”

The engaged pastor then went on to write that she would continue preaching.

There were mixed reactions to her decision on Facebook. Some supported her stance. One woman

“Absolutely agree, good for her. She's taken it to her God and it's between them. She doesn't have to hold head down to please everyone else's hang-ups. We all need to learn to leave our sins and burdens at the cross, get up and walk tall, because we know we serve a forgiving God."

Some questioned whether she was setting a good example. One commentator stated:

“I am not judging her, but no one is exempted from the word of God. If you are a child of God, you might even be the Pope, you still have to obey. I am tired of pastors justifying their sin because they can preach.”

Another shared:

“I commend her for deciding to keep the child, but don't pretend and try to justify what she was doing.”

One other stated:

“We all make ‘mistakes', but best not to flaunt them! Leaders are called to lead by example, I thought.”

Pastor Coleman’s twins are due in January.
