SMILES: A woman enjoys the carnival vibe
NOT ONLY did the show go on but Notting Hill Carnival proved its naysayers wrong with a peaceful fun-filled event.
Despite a small shower of rain, even the dubious summer weather got into the festival spirit with the sun shining down on the hundreds of thousands of people who turned out for two-day celebration of Caribbean culture.
Sariah Martin, 23, of west London, told The Voice: “I come every year and wasn’t going to be put off but all the hysteria in the media.
“Carnival is always full of good vibes and I believed people would come here to have an even better time especially because of all that has happened. This is what London is all about.”
A record number of police officers were on duty and 245 arrests – only two up from last year – were made for offences including drug possession and public disorder.
Officers are investigating the stabbing of a 20-year-old man near the parade route in west London on Bank Holiday Monday.
He is said to be in a serious condition in hospital. Five people - a boy aged 17, three 20-year-old men and a man aged 21 – are being held in custody.
Tim Godwin, the Metropolitan (Met) Police's acting commissioner, said carnival organisers, float drivers and band leaders had all come together and the "support for the police from the committee has been outstanding".
Notting Hill Carnival is expected to be bigger than ever to coincide with the London 2012 Olympics.

CommentsDo we really want the media
Do we really want the media to go overboard with praise because 'only' one man lies on deaths door, having been stabbed?
Do we really want to be patronised and molly coddled, and told how wondeful we are, just because carnival passed with no death and destruction? I know some of us are surprised, and even proud of the 'achievement', but why?
"Oh, and in other news, black people were acting in a very civilised manner during a carnival..."
When any event runs smoothly, it tends never to get coverage - this is the nature of the beast. It's just not very interesting to read. When things go wrong, it's news.
Nottinghill carnival
Congratulations to the carnival organisors and stewards. I agree with the previous persons comments as the media was willing something to happen during the carnival so that it could be splashed on the news trying to make black people look bad as usual. They seemed so disappointed that there was hardly any coverage at all.
Well done to the youths who attended and did not make us the centre of unwanted attention
From my experience of
From my experience of previous years' events, it was almost certainly, a lot less peaceful than reported. Hardly, 'peaceful' when hundreds of people were still arrested. Unfortunately, there're an awful lot of jerks, in your community.
Praise for 'peaceful' carnival
I arrived here from the US to attend my very first UK Carnival. The police presence was a bit off putting but I guess for good reasons. I was impressed with the cultural diversity of the massive crowd. I usually attend the Miami, Florida Carnival were the Trinidadian presence are overwheling second by the Jamaicans. I see the tables are turned here. I had hope to have seen lots more sound systems and especially more masqueraders.
I am happy for the community that the show which may not have gone on, did go on. I am happy I came. The people I interacted with were absolutely great. The 4 1/2 ft sugarcane I bought was a big conversation starter as natives of places like Pakistan and Indian welcomed a familiar sight and people from the mostly scandinavian country enquired what it was. West Indians on the other hand were quite amused by the sheer size of my sugarcane which created some laughter.
It looked really good and I
It looked really good and I am so glad that it was peaceful. Have to say really fed up with the media in this country, so negative did we see the beautiful costumes or see coverage of the event or acts. No just the arrest figures for the day which is similar to most festivals in the UK. In the Mirror newspaper no coverage just the incident of the stabbing. But well done to the organizers its the second largest to Brazil that's a big achievement.
carnival
Iattended carnival the first time for ten years.
Iattended to show solidarity with this world famous event, because of the stay away prpoganda put out by the press and the police.
The carinval was peaceful not because of the police but due to the responsible adults and young people.
You will have noted how minimalistic the coverage of the event was.
Black events only get recognition when something goes wrong bad news is good news.
Congrats to all the young people who did not behave in the anticipated manner
Proud of you black youth.
