Police manhunt for convict who escaped from court

ESCAPED JAIL: Leon Brown fled the court after being sentenced

POLICE ARE looking for an escaped convict who fled from the dock as he was sentenced to 18 months in jail.

Leon Brown, 26, from Chapeltown, Leeds, was sentenced after being found guilty of breaching a community order relating to a blackmail offence.

West Yorkshire Police believe he pushed a Leeds Combined Court security officer and ran from the unsecured dock shortly after the sentencing at 10.30am, yesterday.

A police spokesman said: "He is described as a black man, aged 26 years old, 6ft tall and of a stocky build.

"He was wearing blue jeans, a khaki jacket and a blue t-shirt when he left the building. He lives in Chapeltown and also has links to the Gipton area.

"Anyone who sees Leon Brown is asked not to approach him and to dial 999 immediately."

A spokesman for prisoner escort service GEOAmey said: "We will be conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident in conjunction with the West Yorkshire Police and Ministry of Justice."
