ORLANDO MAGIC guard Elfrid Payton ahead talked to the media ahead of his team’s trip to London this week. The Orlando Magic host the Toronto Raptors at The O2 in London on January 14 as part of NBA Global Games London 2016.
What are your thoughts on playing in London?
EP: I think it’s exciting and a good look for the NBA. It is just going to be different for us.
Have you been to London before?
I have been to Europe but not to London (yet).
What are you most looking forward to?
Just the main sights and being able to see some of the things they have to offer.
What do you expect from the UK fans when you get across to London?
I expect a good reception, I think we have a good following over there so I am excited to play in front of the fans over there.
Do you know much about British sport?
Not much! I can’t say I know any of the soccer teams but I’m ready to learn.
You’ve already played Toronto this season. What are their strengths?
They are a good, experienced, playoff team.
Who is their best player?
They have two really good players who can get to the foul line and cause you problems in (DeMar) DeRozan and (Kyle) Lowry, and then they have the inside threat of (Jonas) Valanciunas.
What did you learn from the first game against them?
We learned that we can beat them. We just have to stick to what we do and make sure that we’re getting stops and not get caught in transition.
Your main strengths?
My defence, my ability to get into the paint and find open guys.
It was Allen Iverson, for how hard he played, his ability to get into the paint, and just his all-round toughness. When I was younger I was much shorter, like he was, so he was someone I could identify with from that point.
The game is live on BT Sport 1 and BT Sport Showcase or via NBA LEAGUE PASS (www.nba.tv).
