Oprah Winfrey pledges support to gun control organisation

WORTHY CAUSE: Oprah is backing March For Our Lives

JUST WEEKS after her auspicious Golden Globes speech, Oprah is once again demonstrating political prowess by supporting Stateside gun control movement March For Our Lives. Taking place in Washington D.C next month, this will kick-start a series of demonstrations across the United States of America.

March For Our Lives was formed by survivors of last week's shooting (14 February) at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Florida, that left 17 people dead.

The group is planning to rally on 24 March to "to demand that a comprehensive and effective bill be immediately brought before Congress to address...gun issues", according to a mission statement published on its website.

In a tweet published on Tuesday (20 February), Winfrey pledged to donate $500,000 (£359,550), matching that of acclaimed actor George Clooney and his wife, who also donated to the initiative. Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw have called the students "an inspiration to us all" and commended their efforts "to take a stand for the benefit of this and future generations."

Winfrey tweeted: “George and Amal, I couldn’t agree with you more. I am joining forces with you and will match your $500,000 donation to ‘March For Our Lives.’

“These inspiring young people remind me of the Freedom Riders of the 60s who also said we’ve had ENOUGH and our voices will be heard.”
