Muyiwa teams up with star producer for new album

GREAT EXPERIENCE: UK gospel star Muyiwa says working with top producer Kevin Bond was a once in a lifetime opportunity

MUYIWA, THE UK’s most popular black Chrstian artist is busy promoting his group Riversong’s fourth album Declaring His Name Around The World.

The album is already top of the Amazon World music chart.

It was produced by gospel legend Kevin Bond, whose work with artists like Yolanda Adams and Donnie McClurkin helped make them gospel superstars. The album also features guest vocals from Darwin Hobbs, Mary Alessi (sister of Martha Munizzi) and contributions from Chinese and Indian praise and worship leaders.

Muyiwa admits he found working with Bond both daunting and exciting. “He was a huge influence on all the singers and musicians. Our team has people who have worked with the best in the worlds of pop, R'n'B and jazz in the UK, yet for all of them it was a dream come true. Kevin Bond brought out the best in the singers and musicians.”

As a successful artist, Muyiwa always seems to be a step ahead of the rest, and it must be said, a Nigerian praise and worship artist who records tracks with Chinese and Indian artists is highly original. However, he says it made sense to do so. “Conservative estimates have the number of Christians in India at almost 30 million and in China up to 54 million. Pandit, who recorded the Indian song starts with some Carnatic singing which hails from the Chennaie region and the sound is beautiful. And apart from teaching us to sing in Mandarin, Miss Cheng, who does the Chinese song, helps us to express a sound that is true to worship from that region.”

Although Declaring His Name Around The World is bound to increase Muyiwa’s international profile even further, he is not just interested in the album being a bestseller. He wants it to touch lives.

“I hope people will connect with the project in a way they find not only enjoyable but inspiring. I hope it sparks a hunger in people for music from different cultures.”

And he adds laughing “I hope we win a Grammy!”

There is a reason why Muyiwa is called the hardest working man in UK gospel. Not only is he a gigging praise and worship artist, he presents the most popular gospel radio show in the UK on the country’s leading Christian radio station, Premier. He is Station Director of Premier Gospel Radio, and also presents Turning Point, a TV magazine show which is broadcast throughout the world and has made him a household name in Africa.

When asked how he manages to juggle so many balls at the same time he replied, “Whilst it is a task and sometimes tiring, on the whole I feel like a fish in water. I would do it all even if I wasn’t getting paid. The opportunity to give people songs to express themselves with, and then to travel and meet people who tell you, ‘Your TV show blesses me’ is a great tonic.”

The next few months will be busy ones for this popular artist. He’s set to appear in a launch concert for the album at the Royal Festival Hall on October 14 and BET are set to broadcast a world exclusive of his first video from the album.

All in all, Muyiwa is a praise and worship artist who has much to thank God for. That’s why he is keen to always bless the Lord, and to always remember his many benefits.
