Mum of murder victim believes brother was wrongly convicted

SPEAKING OUT: Jennifer Pinto

A MOTHER whose son was shot dead in Greenwich believes her brother was wrongly convicted of the murder and is appealing for help proving his innocence.

Jennifer Pinto, whose son Genson Courtney was shot on 3 July 2011 on Banning Street and later died in hospital, thinks the real killers are at large while her brother David Pinto has been wrongly imprisoned.

David Pinto was convicted alongside Robert Bleach of murdering Genson Courtney at the Old Bailey in 2013 and is currently serving a life sentence.

However, David Pinto’s case has been taken on by a legal charity specialising in investigating wrongful convictions.

VICTIM: Genson Courtney

Lawyers from the Centre for Criminal Appeals’ Innocence Initiative have sent submissions arguing that David Pinto’s conviction is unsafe to the Criminal Cases Review Commission – the body with the power to refer cases back to the Court of Appeal.

Jennifer Pinto said: “My brother David helped raise Genson – it makes absolutely no sense that he would’ve killed him.

I’ve lost my son and now I’m losing my brother too. I feel totally let down by the police’s investigation. If you know something that could help the lawyers prove his innocence, please, please let them know.

I can’t fully grieve for my son until my innocent brother is set free.”

JAIL: David Pinto

Emily Bolton, David Pinto’s lawyer, said: “We took on David’s case because there’s no direct evidence implicating him in the murder – the prosecution’s case was entirely circumstantial.

“There are strong signs the police got this case wrong – and an innocent man is in prison as a result. Anyone with information is welcome to get in touch with us.”
