SEVERAL MRS America contestants have accused the president of the pageant of making racist remarks.

Three African-American participants have claimed that the Mrs America CEO and president, David Marmel, used the n-word and made stereotypical remarks about the African-American community during a conversation they had with him, CNN has reported.

The women – 2018 Delaware state winner Kimberley Phillips, 2018 Missouri state winner Brandy Palacios and 2018 New Jersey state winner Crissy Tumpson and 2018 Ohio state winner Jeri Ward – revealed the accusations, which refer to an alleged incident at the 2018 Mrs America competition in August, during a press conference held on Monday.

Ward, who is white, has said that she overheard the conversation but did not act, CNN reported.

Marmel’s accusers are not seeking financial compensation and have no plans to take legal action but say they do want an apology from him.

As well as alleged derogatory comments against NFL player and social justice activist Colin Kaepernick, the women claim that Marmel said “black women need to stop having babies and having four baby daddies”.

The Mrs America president told CNN that he was “blindsided” by the claims made against him, which he denies. He also conveyed to the American broadcaster that he was previously unaware that the contestants had an issue with him and described their accusations as “untruthful, self-serving, nonsense bordering on reverse discrimination”.

The women are being represented by women’s rights lawyer Gloria Allred.

Marmel, a TV producer and entertainment executive, established the Mrs America competition in 1976.
