'Mother of hip-hop' dies, aged 75

THE LEGENDARY producer behind the hip-hop classic Rapper’s Delight, died earlier today (Sept 30), it has been reported.

Sylvia Robinson, most famed for being the co-founder of Sugar Hill Records, passed away, aged 75, from heart failure in New Jersey. She had been ill for the last five months.

Hailed the 'Mother of hip-hop,' the mother-of-three famously launched the careers of rapping group, Sugar Hill Gang, and award-winning rapper, Grandmaster Flash. She also embarked on a solo project as one half of R'n'B duo, Mickey & Sylvia.

Members of the hip-hop community have taken to Twitter to pay their respects to the late star.

Public Enemy's Chuck D wrote: "RIP Ms Rob. A black woman putting rap records on the map/now a scene where today women are voided out of it. sic]"

Robinson leaves behind three sons, Joseph Robinson Jr., Leland Robinson and Rhondo Robinson.
