Melania Trump arrives in Ghana for solo Africa trip

TOUCHDOWN: Melania Trump

U.S. FIRST Lady Melania Trump has arrived in Ghana as part of a tour of Africa — her first major solo international trip since her husband became president.

Mrs. Trump's solo trip of the continent will take her to Malawi, Kenya and Egypt and will "focus on maternal and newborn care in hospitals, education for children, the deep culture and history woven into each African country, and how the United States is supporting each country on its journey to self-reliance," according to the White House.

She will also promote her Be Best initiative which aims to tackle issues such as cyberbullying and boost healthy living.

Taking to Twitter, Melania Trump said: "We are taking off for #Africa! So looking forward to visiting #Ghana #Malawi #Kenya & #Egypt as I take #BeBest international. #FLOTUSinAfrica2018"

Ahead of her trip Mrs Trump said that she was looking forward to visiting "four beautiful and very different countries in Africa".

"She is interested in Africa because she has never been before and knows that each country will have its own unique history and culture." Stephanie Grisham, her communications director, said.

Melania Trump is following in the footsteps of other first ladies who have visited the African continent. Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush and Michelle Obama traveled to Africa multiple times during their husbands presidencies.
