Matalan to make its Oxford Street debut

WEST END DEBUT: Matalan is heading to Oxford Street

LOW-COST clothing chain Matalan is heading to Europe's busiest shopping street next month.

The retail store - known for it's large out-of-town shopping 'sheds' and outlets - is to branch out with its first West End store on Oxford Street, London, in June.

The three-storey outlet will be next to a branch of luxury crystal specialists Swarovski, halfway between Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road, and close to a Crossrail station when it opens in 2018, reported The Evening Standard.

Managing director Jason Hargreaves — a son of the founder, who is now based in Monaco — said: “One of the reasons we’ve done it is for the profile. Traditionally we’ve been a big-box out-of-town retailer and obviously online as well.

“This will open up a big opportunity for us, we want to get the value message across. Oxford Street’s been on our radar for some time but it’s been three years waiting for the right site to come along.”

The store, opening on June 4 with over 140 member of staff, is expected to attract many Middle Eastern shoppers, with Matalan having branches in the UAE, Bahrain, Jordan, Oman and Qatar.

The Oxford Street store will be one of Matalan’s smallest at 16,000 sq ft compared with an average 25,000 sq ft for the out-of-town units.

This branch will stock only its women’s and children fashion ranges and luggage.
