The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir to sing FA Cup anthem

SOMETHING TO SING ABOUT: The Lewishan and Greenwich NHS Choir

THE LEWISHAM and Greenwich NHS Choir have been given the honour of performing traditional FA Cup Final anthem ‘Abide With Me’ this Saturday (21 May) at Wembley Stadium.

They will perform the passionate pre-kick off hymn ahead of the world’s most famous footballing event, which this year sees Manchester United and Crystal Palace compete to have their name engraved on the famous trophy.

Choir members will also be collaborating with Tinie Tempah. The Choir – which is made up of staff including physiotherapists, nurses, porters, doctors, chaplains and administrators - claimed the coveted Christmas Number 1 spot in 2015 with their single 'A Bridge Over You' and are now set to release their debut album on June 24.

Caroline Smith choir coordinator and child physiotherapist said: “We’re thrilled to be performing such an emotional song at such a prestigious event. Our goal is to celebrate the NHS and all its wonderful staff so it is amazing to be able to do this to such a wide audience.

“'Abide With Me' really stirs the crowd, not only in the stadium of course but the millions watching on TV around the world. It’s been linked to the F.A Cup Final for many years and we follow a list of very talented people who have been given this rare privilege”.

MECCA OF FOOTBALL: Wembley Stadium will hist the FA Cup final between Crystal Palace and Manchester United on Saturday

The choir members recently recorded their debut album, 'Something Inside So Strong', over weekends in their own time. All royalties earned by the choir through the album will be paid into Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust’s charitable funds.

The charity funds things that are not NHS provision but enhance patient experience and staff working lives (for example, arts for health projects such as dance and singing groups for patients).
