SHADOW SECRETARY of State for Women and Equalities, Dawn Butler, has made a pledge at the Investing in Ethnicity and Race Conference, which took place last week (Oct 13).

She joins forces with diversity expert, Sarah Garrett MBE and Bank of England, on a new campaign to tackle ‘racial injustices in the workplace’.

The Labour MP is pledging action to enhance opportunities for BAME employees in the workplace, and stated that improving career progression for people from black and minority ethic backgrounds was one of her top priorities.

She also backed plans for a ‘Maturity Matrix’ that will provide support and guidance for employers who want to strengthen support for their BAME employees. The MP announced plans for a summit in the Houses of Parliament in November, with representatives from business and industry to highlight how they can deliver positive change.

Speaking after the conference, which was backed by financial giants HSBC, TSB and the Bank of England, Butler said: “The Investing in Ethnicity and Race conference is just the beginning. It is time for further action and that is why I am convening an event in Parliament with Sarah Garrett MBE and representatives from business and industry to highlight racial injustices in the workplace and look at how we can dramatically improve the situation.

"Earlier this year, the Race in the Workplace study, led by Baroness McGregor Smith, starkly highlighted the struggle faced by people from diverse backgrounds. There remains a lot more to do.”

Investing in Ethnicity and Race conference founder, Sarah Garrett MBE, commented: “Having Dawn Butler’s support is fantastic. She wants to work with us to guarantee that the new Maturity Matrix is a useful tool for employers, but also ensure there is widespread support in Parliament and from the Government for our campaign to improve workplace opportunities for BAME people."
