Labour Councillor Sherma Batson Has Died

TRAGIC LOSS: A 'true pillar of the local community'

THERE HAS been an outpouring of grief after Roebuck and Hertfordshire County Councillor Sherma Batson MBE DL died suddenly last night.

Writing on Facebook, Ahisha Ferguson explains that her mother presented well during the 24 hours prior to her death, before collapsing and being hospitalised with a suspected bleed on the brain. Sources close to the family suspect that Sherma may have suffered a brain aneurysm but an official cause has not been confirmed.

Sherma, 59, was also the executive member for Communities and Equalities on Stevenage Borough Council and the first black, female Mayor of the town (2014/5). In the past, she served on the Hertfordshire Police Authority and stood for the role of Police and Crime Commissioner in 2012.

Mrs Batson devoted much of her time to the interest of her local communities and was awarded an MBE in June 2008, for her dedication to making a difference.

We will pay special tribute to Sherma Batson in next Thursday's issue of our newspaper. If you have any memories of her which you'd like to see included then please email
