John Fashanu released after arrest

RELEASED: John Fashanu

FORMER WIMBLEDON Football Club player John Fashanu was arrested at his home in Abuja, Nigeria, on July 17 after being charged with selling an estate that wasn’t on the market.

According to Nigerian Watch newspaper, police arrested the 54 year-old on alleged ‘criminal conspiracy’ and he was taken to prison where he stayed for two days before being discharged on bail.

Speaking about the arrest, Police Deputy Inspector General Hyacinth Dagala said:

“John Fashanu was arrested on July 17 in connection with an allegation of criminal conspiracy and obtaining the sum of N9,550,000 (£23,000) under false pretence.

“He was granted administrative bail on July 18 but because of his inability to produce the requisite surety on that day, he remained in detention until July 19 when he was released.”

However, an anonymous friend of the former Gladiators presenter played down the arrest when he spoke to The Mirror and claimed it was a misunderstanding between friends. He added:

“This is a business deal between friends that has gone south and the police were asked to basically mediate. It will all be sorted very quickly. It was a just a business deal.”

Fashanu, known as 'Fash', started playing football professionally in the 1980s. He moved to Wimbledon FC in 1986 and helped elevate the club to the First Division. He later moved to Aston Villa in 1994, but his stint with the club was short-lived after being injured in a tackle with Ryan Giggs, forcing him to retire at the end of that season. Fashanu then entered the world of television presenting. As well as presenting Gladiators, he was also a contestant on I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in 2003, and hosted Deal Or No Deal Nigeria.
