Job cuts loom for Ford staff

CUTS: Ford

US MOTOR giant, Ford are set to announce job cuts of up to 10% of its global workforce.

According to reports, the cuts, first reported in the Wall Street Journal, are part of a plan to save $3bn (£2.3bn) during 2017, as sales started to dip.

Ford refused to confirm or deny the story, but said in a statement that it was focused on its plans to "drive profitable growth".

It added: "Reducing costs and becoming as lean and efficient as possible also remain part of that work. We have not announced any new people efficiency actions, nor do we comment on speculation."

Ford employs around 200,000 people, with with almost 14,000 in the UK.

European car sales tumbled for the first time in five years, down 6.6% in April. The first signs of falling sales in Europe were in the UK, where April numbers fell by 20%, partly due to a change in vehicle licensing rules, according to the Evening Standard.
